The partners of the intersectoral and interdisciplinary DigitAlgaesation consortium.

The consortium brings together unique and complementary expertise in the field of photosynthesis, microalgae-based processes, monitoring and automatic control. The industrial participants were meticulously selected and jointly cover all the essential aspects of the technological challenges of this project.

The consortium covers the wide spectrum from fundamental research, over strategic basic research to applied research and production. Here we summarise the key expertise of each participant:

  • University of Padova has a long tradition in microalgae fundamentals and technology as well as in process systems engineering, with competencies ranging from photosynthesis biology and genetics to microalgae process modelling, optimal design of experiments and statistical process control.
  • CentraleSupélec has expertise in modelling, identification, estimation and advanced control of microalgae process with complementary expertise in microalgae and biofilm process, their optimisation and automation
  • Technical University of Denmark has renown experience in both modelling and experimental assessment of microalgae-based systems, particularly with respect to nutrient response.
  • Imperial College London has strong expertise in the biological fundamentals of the photosynthetic mechanisms in microalgae and cyanobacteria as well as in the modelling, optimisation and control of biological
  • INRIA has world-leading expertise in the development of operational strategies and advanced control procedures for microalgae processes, particularly in open cultivation systems as well as in the modelling and environmental sustainability analysis of microalgae behaviour in industrial
  • University of Almeria has long been working in microalgae process modelling, cultivation systems design and control, particularly in highly non-ideal situations, with multiple species and wastewater utilisation;
  • Wageningen University has been a world leader in the design and optimisation of photobioreactors, development of monitoring systems, and process optimisation, founding the AlgaePARC, one of the world most important research centres in algae
  • “G. W. Leibniz” University of Hannover is one of the recognised centres for the development of sensors and monitoring technology in bioprocesses, and particularly in microalgae
  • TU Dresden has a long-term experience in the development of microfabrication technologies, as well as techniques for effective monitoring cell cultivation at single-cell level, applied to microalgae systems.
